I recently had the privilege of teaching the ASA CoNav 105 course to two students at Afterguard Sailing Academy in Oakland. After 4 days in a classroom, they passed the very difficult test, proving that they understood the skills of navigation, including Dead Reconning, Compass Error, taking various types of Fixes, Set and Drift, Course To Steer, Danger Bearings, Tides and Currents, and much more. As a reward, I took them out on my boat. Conditions were favorable to get under the Golden Gate Bridge, and into the Pacific Ocean, as defined by the ColRegs line, before tuning back. Here are a few photos from a wonderful day on the water.




I find sailing alone to be a kind of therapy, flowing with the wind and water. I went out by myself ra few months ago, and was inspired to take some video and actually talk into the camera about my experience (a first for me):
